Statement on the Nomination of Brett Kavanaugh
The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court represents yet another step in President Trump’s assault on our fundamental values. His “judicial credentials” represent nothing more than a desire to take away a woman’s right to choose, revoke access to health care for millions of Americans, and destroy protections for workers and consumers for generations to come. He should not be confirmed, period.
Over the past 100 years, our federal courts, especially the Supreme Court, have been a refuge for Americans who were abused, marginalized, discriminated against and exploited. The Constitution’s promise of full equality and the steady expansion of rights and liberties to all Americans has only strengthened our country.
Today, that progress is threatened by a cramped view of the Constitution – one that equates corporations with human beings, views liberty as a scarce good to be enjoyed by a few, and elevates the pursuit of profit over the pursuit of happiness.
We must use all of our power as citizens and elected leaders to make sure that this warped view of the Constitution does not gain an even stronger foothold on the Supreme Court with the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. As someone who has spent a career taking on the abuse of power in court, I know the power of the law, and I know this is a fight we must win.
