Statement of Attorney General Candidate Chris Mattei on Dinesh D’Souza Pardon

Dinesh D’Souza willfully broke campaign finance laws to influence the outcome of an election. As chief of the public corruption and financial fraud unit in the US Attorney’s office, I prosecuted individuals who thought they were above our campaign finance laws that were created to keep dark money and corruption out of our politics. Dinesh D’Souza and his offensive views are largely irrelevant. But, the pardon matters. It matters because President Trump’s continued cynical use of his pardon power to get his political allies off the hook fuels the perception that there are two justice systems: one for the well-connected and powerful and one for everybody else. It’s wrong and further undermines the public’s confidence in the rule of law.
